Recession Proof Scrapbooking – Tips for Saving Money

Friday, January 16th, 2009

It’s tough right now – the economy is terrible, people are in debt, houses are getting foreclosed for lots of folks. But, if you are not in the most dire circumstances (and if you are, hang in there) you can save your dollars to keep on doing your crafts and scrapbooks. You can find less expensive sources of scrapbook supplies such as paper, albums and embellishments. And really, the more tight money gets, the more people get creative about how to stretch their ideas as well as their dollars.

Tips for Saving Money on Scrapbooking:

Make your own calendars for yourself - or make scrapbook calendars for gifts. There are templates you can buy to do this (for traditional scrapbooking). And there are online calendar making sites that are really not that provide custom calendar making tools that aren’t very expensive (look at lulu.com).

Be patient before buying. Wait for your favorite supply stores (online or local retail) to have sales or look for online coupons when buying new products (especially for a big ticket item). Also check out discounted products at office supply stores when they have a sale.

Use what you have. Think creatively about scrapbooking with stuff you have (so you won’t need to buy as many supplies). For example, use things like ticket stubs from movies, airlines, sporting events, old report cards, greeting cards, invitations, postcards, playing cards, tarot cards, foreign paper money, maps, letters, kid’s drawings, menus and restaurant receipts, recipes, and other things you probably stuffed in a drawer for scrapbooking themes.

Thrift stores and garage/yard sales. You can find lots of books and magazines in thrift shops (Salvation Army or Goodwill) and many bookstores – especially those that specialize in used books. You can use magazine photos or old calendar pictures as backgrounds in scrapbooks instead of expensive paper. Oh, and don’t forget Big Lots and  Dollar Stores, where you can buy wrapping paper and cut it to fit your scrapbook.

It’s nature’s way of telling you… Remember all the projects that kids do in school like sealing dried leaves in wax paper? Well, now we have lamination! And, you could just dry leaves (pressed into a book) and after you dry them and glue them onto a page, they could be sealed with a spray fixative.

Trade ya 2 ribbons for 3 buttons… If you have scrappin friends or neighbors that may have extra supplies (stamps, paper, albums, ribbons, stickers, etc.) you could trade what you don’t plan to use with them.

Fabric – it’s flat after all – Fabric works well in scrapbooks if the right adhesives are used. Think about going through remnants you have or go to a fabric store and see what is there. The designs on cloth are really not too different from scrapbooking paper designs!

So, for making a scrapbook when money is hard to find, there lots of creative options!
