Hello,

I just became engaged over the weekend, and it’s quite exciting! We have yet to set a date etc…I will start thinking about details in the next 3 months or so…yet, I would love to get a hold of any books, mostly a wedding organizer, or a scrapbook of some sort to insert any ideas…since, I will not be using a wedding planner (I’m on a budget) I would love to hear any of your suggestions…I really don’t know how to begin!

Thank you!

Go to your local bookstores. They’ll have plenty to pick from. Martha Stewart has one, theknot has one. There’s a ton out there.
I suggest finding one that has pocket folders in the back so you can keep contracts and papers in it. The one I have also has a place for business cards and pages for keeping phone numbers of everyone you come in contact with.

    First off CONGRATULATIONS!!
I went out and bought a few bridal magazines and then mostly used this website for everything they have a checklist on there and it lets you know when is the best time to do stuff and you check it off. it’s a great resource, I also used it for budgeting I was on a budget as well.

There are lots of cute ones in major bookstores. I found that the pockets were too small and too few, and there was a lot of writing on topics that didnt pertain to me, or I already knew about. So I used a large binder and made labels for each new section as we planned. Whenever I got an idea or was gathering information on something, I stuck it in that section of the binder. I used the internet for questions on etiquette and so forth, and I used my calculator for budgeting.
After the wedding, I went through the binder and pulled anything that I used in the wedding, or things I saved while planning, and made a nice scrapbook that matched my wedding stationery.
This is just my suggestion. Happy planning!

    Congratulations!
First off, I’m glad to know that you are going about this in an organized way. That is the most important thing when planning a wedding. I planned my own wedding as well and just hired a wedding coordinator for the rehearsal and wedding day. I suggest that you put together a binder with tabs. You might want to start off with a thick binder since you’re starting off and you’ll probably gather a lot of ideas as you get closer to making the final decisions. To organize your binder, you should have tabs for each category…wedding dress, bridesmaids, groom and groomsmen, photography and videography, transportation, flowers, etc., etc. Also, it is helpful to get information and ideas from wedding websites. The one that helped me so much was The Knot (www.theknot.com). It helped me get organized and keep track of due dates, based on my wedding date. Also, I went to a bridal show to get ideas and contacts for florists, caterers, etc. I suggest you not go to too many bridal shows coz you just get ****** into it and can’t pin down what you really want. Oh, and before you start off, you should think about what kind of wedding you want or the theme you’re going for. That always helps to pin down the stuff you’ll need as you go along. You can worry about the colors later when you set your date coz colors depend on the season of your wedding.
So in summary, decide what your theme will be, get a binder and tabs for each category of the wedding, build your account with a wedding planning website and go on from there. As far as budget, if you already have a set amount of how much you’re going to spend, STICK TO IT. Also, when you start researching vendors such as DJs or bands, photographers and videographers, baker for your cake, etc., you would want to ask for their samples and check their references.

A lot of places give out free wedding planners. You can usually find at least one free wedding planner at a bridal expo. Bridal magazines often offer a free or low-cost organizer. Some local newspapers will also send you a free wedding organizer if you request one. (The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in Pennsylvania does this for resident brides.) Do a google search for “free wedding planner” or “free wedding organizer.” I got some really nice ones – in binders with pockets and tabs and with all sorts of great info in them – from a bridal expo for free. Companies love to give them out for free, because vendors will pay to have advertisements in them.

If you are willing to spend 30 on a wedding planner then how about getting a binder and instead investing the money in Stephi Stewart. She is all about saving a girl some money.

The one that I bought and really felt was helpful was “The Complete Wedding Planner and Organizer” by Elizabeth Lluch. It gave great color picture ideas in the front of the binder (yes, it was a binder so you could remove lists they gave you and add your own ideas – complete with hole punch!) It kept me very organized since I was able to insert my lists, information my photographer, florist, dress stores etc. gave me, plus there were folders under each category for additional organization. Congratulations and good luck!

My website has information on creating your own wedding planner and has worksheets to download for free. I found that this was more helpful to me than purchasing a book. Most books or planners don’t provide a lot of space for samples and pictures and things.

You can use a simple 3 ring binder and buy a set of tabs to separate your sections. Read more below:

Most wedding vendors give out free wedding planners, though mind you they are full of advertisements which may or may not be helpful. If you check out major book stores, you can look at planners in the wedding section (write down detail like the ISBN) and see if you can find it cheaper online from places like amazon.com. Also search eBay for wedding planners. You might get one at a cheaper price.
